Boundary tones

Boundary tones appear at the end of intonational phrases (IPs) and at the end of intermediate phrases (ips).

• 7 types of boundary tones at the end of IPs (marked with the % symbol after the tone):
  • 3 with 1 target: L%, !H% and H%
  • 3 with 2 targets: HL%, LH% and L!H%
  • 1 with 3 targets: LHL%
• 4 types of boundary tones at the end of ips (marked with the - symbol after the tone):
  • 3 with 1 target: L-, !H- and H-
  • 1 with 2 targets: LH-

In Cat_ToBI, phrase accents are not used. There has been found no evidence for their necessity in the system to account for all tonal movement on non accented syllables.
