This course is organized in two main sections: the Cat_ToBI labelling system and the Exercises. There is also an additional section for References, which includes information about the Cat_ToBI labeling system, access to other ToBI systems, either in course format or as guidelines, general references about Catalan prosody, and direct access to the Interactive Atlas of Catalan Intonation.
The Cat_ToBI labelling system describes how it works. It then shows how to label Catalan prosody, with explanations separated into two main parts:
- The first part deals with the 5 different levels of prosodic phrasing used in Cat_ToBI, with theoretical explanations and examples for each level.
- The second part deals with tonal representation and shows the labels of pitch accents, boundary tones and nuclear configurations found in Catalan intonation. Each item is presented in an independent section, showing their phonetic realizations, their context(s) of appearance, examples and how to discriminate them from another similar item.
The Exercises section contains two parts.
- In the Ear training subsection, you will find some exercises to practice sound recognition. It teaches you how to identify and discriminate between high, low, rising and falling pitch movements. This is the first step before being confronted with the actual intonation patterns of the Cat_ToBI labelling system for Catalan prosody.
- The Phrasing recognition and the Tonal Representation parts allow you to practice identification of all of the prosodic elements taken into account by Cat_ToBI: the different levels of prosodic phrasing, pitch accents, boundary tones and nuclear configurations.
