Break indices of level 2 (BI 2) are supposed to mark the edge of an accentual phrase (AP), a level of phrasing below the intermediate phrase (ip). In Catalan there is a lack of conclusive evidence regarding the existence of the AP, except in varieties of Catalan like Northern-Catalan (see Sichel-Bazin et al., 2015). Despite this, there is also the possibility to use this level to denote non-phonological prosodic disjunctures, such as slight hesitations or disfluencies.
For more information, see Prieto et al. (2015) and Vanrell & Prieto (2024).
Example
Voleu una llimonada?
[Do you want some lemonade?]
In this example, the speaker hesitates and lengthens the end of the PrWord una, but there is no boundary tone. The right edge of this word may be labelled with a BI 2
